Red Flags – Murder of Women, 2024 is the first choreographic work in the trilogy RED Trilogy. The work is partly based on the book ”En forudsigelig forbrydelse – kvindedrab i Danmark” by author, journalist, and editor at Politiken Line Vaaben and forensic pathologist, PhD Asser HedegĂĽrd Thomsen, published by Forlaget 28B. Additionally, the work draws on Asser HedegĂĽrd Thomsen's PhD thesis "Homicide in Denmark 1992-2016" from 2020, which examines homicides in Denmark during the period 1992-2016. Furthermore the organization Danner has been a sparring partner throughout the creation process of the work.

Three real life stories are included in the Red Flags choreographic work. Two murders and an attempted murder of three very different women in Denmark are described and narrated by Line Vaaben. The 7 sculptures are a central part of the choreographic work and will be exhibited at Kunsthal Aarhus from September 9-29, 2024. The sculptures are placed along the long side of the space, so visitors immediately encounter a kind of red and white procession. The 7 sculptures are Svalholm's interpretation of a classic banner. In a row from the most white banner on the left to the most red banner placed to the right. The 7 sculptures that are part of the performance are designed as 3 meter high flags and created at the Statens VĂŚrksteder for Kunst December/January 2023-2024.

The traditional use of banners in political contexts gives them an activist character with a targeted intention, but without any slogans or familiar symbols. The banners are sewn from silk, an exclusive textile often used for women's dresses, scarves, and underwear. The silk, which is light and airy, is contrasted by the tall and heavy poles with pointed ends, intended to appear persistent as well as threatening. The white banners have large red markings in a carefully selected red shade, clearly reminiscent of blood. Has the silk been wrapped around the women, are the banners a defensive weapon or are they evidence material displayed in front of the audience?

In the exhibition, you can hear a soundscape with 3 stories, which describe two murders and an attempted murder of women in Denmark in the period 1992-2016, read by the Writer, Journalist and Existence Editor at Politiken Line Vaaben. The stories are narrated by Line Vaaben and are woven together by a beautiful composition created by Composer and Soprano Katinka Fogh Vindelev.

Red Flags is based on a desire from Nønne Mai Svalholm to visualize and raise awareness of the extent of femicides, often committed by the woman's partner or ex-partner - the most common type of homicide in Denmark. Banners are furthermore known as a symbol of danger, and the title of the work is aspiration to recognizing and confront transgressive behavior in time, to respond to so-called "red flags". Research shows that one in three women will at some point in their lives be exposed to violence.

For the female victims, the perpetrator's motive was predominantly jealousy and/or divorce. In general, partner murder accounts for 26.7 percent of all homicides in the period, which makes it the single largest type of homicide in Denmark.

There are 536 reasons for this exhibition! That is the number of women killed in Denmark in the period 1992 - 2016.
